Representatives from Manitowoc Lincoln, Manitowoc Lutheran, Roncalli and Two Rivers will be taking part in a donkey basketball tournament on Wednesday beginning at 6:30 at the JFK Fieldhouse. The Jets and Lancers will square off at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Ships and Raiders. The winner of the two games will meet in a championship game immediately thereafter.
The event is being held in order to raise funds for the charity group Americans Serving African Children, which has been in existence for five years.
The group normally holds a pancake breakfast to raise funds but ASAC president Mike Lambert said the organization, which supports orphans in Africa through providing food and shelter among various other endeavors, was looking for a change.
“We were looking for a fundraiser and got in touch with Dairyland Donkey Basketball about hosting a game,” Lambert said. “...It’s a fun way to raise money. There’s so many kids in need of assistance in Africa. The number of orphans is astronomical.”
Teams will consist of eight members with four players on the floor riding donkeys. Players can move around the court off the donkey but must be riding the donkey in order to legally pass or shoot the ball. The teams will be comprised of a mix of students and faculty from the four schools.
Representing Two Rivers will be teachers Jody Stangel and Andy Pagel and students Bobby Geiger, Dexter Smith, Sam Bianchi, Marissa Broehm, Kenzie Walesh and Carly Terp.
For Roncalli, Tomerot Lambert, Andrea Vaca, Nick Stelzer, Sophia Vaca, Jared Patek and Jasmin Elliott will take part for the students while adults will be Mike Teshima and Joe Garceau.
Manitowoc Lutheran is sending students Emily Unke, Brad Kasten, Hannah Yagodinski, Alex Thom, Josh Eickhoff and Brenna Schneider and adults Ryan Rathje and Michelle Luebke.
Finally, Manitowoc Lincoln will field a team of students Holly Nickels, Ellie Pecore and Ben Kohls along with adults Adam Van de Van, Andy Evenson, Lisa Wilke, Craig Charles, Emily Stanke and Stephanie Wolf.
Lambert says the tournament will provide the community with an entertaining evening while raising awareness to the plight of underprivileged orphans.
Tickets, which are $6 in advance and $8 at the door, are on sale now at all four participating schools as well as Ziolkowski Chiropractic and the law firm of Kummer, Lambert, Fox and Glandt. All advance tickets must be purchased by Tuesday.
